Removing and installing propshaft

A twin pillar lifting platform should be used when working on the propshaft.

Notes:

  • ◆ Before removing, mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other. Reinstall in the same position otherwise imbalance will be excessive, the mountings could be damaged causing rumbling noises.
  • ◆ Keep propshaft straight, only store and transport fully extended.

Removing

 
V34-2101
  • ‒ Remove heat shield from vehicle floor.
  • ‒ Remove front exhaust pipe.

=> Repair group 26; Removing and installing parts of exhaust system.

  • ‒ → Disconnect propshaft with flexible coupling from bevel box flange (arrows).
  • ‒ Push propshaft back onto stop.

Note:

→ When removing and installing do not damage seals in propshaft flanges.

  • ‒ Separate front propshaft from rear propshaft.
  • ‒ Remove propshaft intermediate bearing from vehicle.
  • ‒ Remove front propshaft.

  • ‒ → Separate rear propshaft with flexible coupling from viscous coupling flange -arrows-.

  • ‒ → Guide propshaft with flexible coupling forwards out of the propshaft tunnel when in the vicinity of the manual gearbox lower and take out.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence.

Notes:

  • ◆ → When removing and installing do not damage seals in propshaft flanges.
  • ◆ Renew propshaft if damaged.
  • ◆ Ensure propshaft is horizontal when pushing onto guide pins.

  • ‒ → Note flexible coupling installation position.
  • ◆ Markings on flexible coupling -a- show installation direction of bolts.

Tightening torques

Intermediate bearing to body

25 Nm

Front to rear propshaft

40 Nm

Flexible coupling to propshaft

60 Nm

Flexible coupling to viscous coupling

60 Nm

Flexible coupling to bevel box

60 Nm
