Removing and installing track rod (power assisted steering box TRW and ZF)

Removing

The track rods can only be removed/installed with the steering box removed.

  • ‒ → Seal pipe connections on power assisted steering box if not already done.
  •     1 -    Plastic sealing plugs
  •     2 -    Plastic sealing plugs
  • ‒ Clean outside of power assisted steering box in vicinity of the bellows.

  • ‒ Open hose clips and push bellows back.

Use vice clamps, check vice clamps for impurities e.g. metal filings or similar and thoroughly remove.

  • ‒ → Clamp steering box with rack in a vice and unscrew the track rod.

If a spanner face is present on the rack then use an open jaw spanner to counter hold. The rack should not then be tensioned in a vice.

Installing

Install in reverse order.
