Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair
Preliminary Information

If the compressor shaft seal is leaking or if the A/C system has been converted from R12 to R134a (retrofit), the shaft must be replaced with a seal
designed for R134a.

Volvo has produced a tool kit, P/N 999 5602-1, for use in replacing the shaft seal quickly and easily. Other tools should not be used since these may
damage the faces of the seal.

NOTE:  The shaft seal must be replaced in all instances i.e. on new as well as used compressors since the original seal is not suitable for use with R134a.
