Make sure that carbon brushes sit correctly. Test positive brushes, making sure that they do not short or arc to ground. Replace worn or corroded springs.
If necessary use a spring balance to test spring force.
J19 Replacement of carbon brushes
Replace brushes if they are less than 13 mm (0.5 in) in length (new brushes are 18 mm = 0.7 in).

Cut off brushes

Solder on new brushes. Solder quickly and with sufficient heat. On no account must the solder run onto cable because this would prevent brush
from sliding into holder and weaken spring force.
