Power Transmission

A conventional single-plate, dry-disc clutch is fitted to 740/760 models with manual transmission. The driven plate is pushed against the flywheel by a pressure plate incorporating diaphragm springs. Torsional shocks due to engine vibrations and clutch takeup are absorbed in the driven plate by springs.

Clutch specification is dependent on engine and model types.

Clutch

6-cylinder engines

Pressure plate diameter is 9½ inches.

Driven plate has 4 damper springs.

Driven plate diameter = 9 inches.

Clutch

4-cylinder engines

Pressure plate diameter is 9 inches.

Driven plate has 4 damper springs.

Diameter is either 8½ or 9 inches depending on type of engine fitted to vehicle.

Models with 4-cylinder turbocharged engines are equipped with a modified flywheel to take a 9 inch clutch. Earlier vehicles were fitted with a 8½ inch driven plate.

Diesel engines

Diesel engines are prone to more vibrations than petrol (gasoline) engines. Consequently the driven plate has three small pre-damping springs in addition to the 4 standard springs.
