Oil, inspection

- A = Cold range
- B = Hot range
At room temperature (+20°C), the oil level is normally within the "cold" range +40°C. (Obtained after approximately 10 minutes idling indoors).
The hot range is used for normal operating temperature (obtained after approximately 30 minutes highway driving).
Checking oil level
Conditions: Flat surface, engine idling and gear selector in position P.
Shift the gear selector through all positions, stopping in each position for 4-5 seconds. Return the gear selector to position P and wait approximately 2 minutes before checking oil level.
Wipe dipstick with a nylon cloth or chamois cloth (i.e. a material free of lint and loose threads).
High level
Drain off oil. Disconnect the fuel filler pipe from the oil pan. (Tightening torque 90 Nm).
WARNING: The oil may be very hot if the car has been driven recently.
Check that there is no water in the oil (the oil will be white colored). If there is water in the oil, the transmission and the torque converter must be removed and cleaned. The oil cooler must be repaired or replaced. Heavy load can also result in a high level due to abnormally high oil temperatures.
Low level

Top up with oil.
NOTE: 0.51 for BW55 and 0.41 for AW71, between the max and min markings on the dip stick.
Oil grade
- BW55 ATF -oil type G (or F).
- AW70/71 up to and including 1983 ATF oil type G or F.
- AW70/71 from and including 1984 ATF oil type Dexron II D.
Dexron oil must not be mixed with other types.
NOTE: Under no circumstances may additives be added to the transmission fluid.
Check that the low level is not due to leakage.
If the inspection is carried out at a temperature lower than +5°C an incorrect oil level may result. Driving with a low oil level will result in the oil frothing (buzzing sound), which will also result in an incorrect level reading.

NOTE: Add 3 dl for cars with auxiliary oil cooler.
Discolored or burnt smell
Remove the oil pan. Are there abnormal quantities of steel or aluminum particles?
Yes Replace the transmission (se AR1-4 Transmission, to replace ) or if necessary disassemble the transmission and establish the cause.
Replace damaged components. If no fault is found in the transmission the particles have probably come from the torque converter. If this is the case, replace the torque converter and clean the oil cooler and pipes.
No. Change the oil and clean the oil pan, oil screen, particle magnets and the oil cooler (see AB1-2 Oil cooling system, to clean page 57).
Alternatively, replace the transmission (AR1-4 Transmission, to replace page 81).
NOTE: If the oil is discolored or burned as a result of hard driving or due to the towing of a caravan (but the function of the transmission is correct, the method Oil cooling system, to clean on page 57 should be used when topping up with new oil. (Top up until clean oil comes out of the return line).
