Renewing exhaust camshaft oil seal

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor -2085-

t	Counterhold tool -3036-

t	Assembly tool -T10071-

Procedure l  Cylinder head installed –  Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket → Chapter. –  Loosen camshaft sprocket using counterhold tool -3036-. –  Detach camshaft sprocket.

–  To guide oil seal extractor, screw bolt for camshaft sprocket -arrow- into camshaft as far as it will go until hand-tight. –  Unscrew inner section of oil seal extractor -2085- two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer section and lock inner section with knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor -2085-, place it in position and, exerting firm pressure, screw it into oil seal as far as possible. –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner section of oil seal extractor against camshaft until the oil seal is pulled out. –  Clamp flats of oil seal extractor in vice and use pliers to remove seal. –  Clean running surface and sealing surface.

–  Place guide sleeve -T10071/1- onto camshaft journal.   Note Do not lubricate sealing lip of oil seal. –  Slide oil seal over guide sleeve onto camshaft journal. –  Detach guide sleeve.

–  Press oil seal in as far as the stop using press sleeve -T10071/3- and bolt -T10071/4-.

–  Install camshaft sprocket. l  The thinner web of the camshaft sprocket faces outwards -arrows- and the marking for TDC is visible.

Caution If a piston is at “TDC” the valves could strike the piston when turning the camshaft. Pistons must therefore not be at “TDC” This could otherwise result in damage to valves and pistons. –  Tighten securing bolt of camshaft sprocket (use counterhold tool -3036-). –  Install toothed belt (adjust valve timing) → Anchor. Tightening torque
