Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ Lifting tackle 2024 A
  • ◆ VAS 6100

or

  • ◆ Workshop crane V.A.G 1202 A
  • ◆ 15 mm socket insert Matra V/175 (on vehicles with automatic gearbox)

Procedure

  • ● Engine/gearbox assembly removed and attached to engine mounting T10012.

Vehicles with manual gearbox:

  • ‒ → Unscrew bolt -1- with gearbox installed.
  • ‒ Pull up splash plate -2-.

Note:

Shown in illustration with gearbox removed.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:

  • ‒ → Disconnect coolant hoses from ATF cooler -arrow-.

  • ‒ Remove plug from hole in torque converter cover plate.
  • ‒ → Screw out 3 nuts of torque converter -arrow- with socket attachment SW 15 Matra V/175 (turn crankshaft 1/3 of a turn each time).

Note:

To prevent engine from turning when loosening torque converter nuts, counterhold central bolt on vibration damper.

  • ‒ Remove starter.
  • ‒ → Attach lifting tackle 2024 A to automatic gearbox and workshop lifter VAS 6100 or V.A.G 1202 A.

Note:

To balance the centre of gravity of the engine, position the hook attachments as shown in the illustration.

Important
The hooks and locating pins of the lifting tackle must be secured with locking pins -arrows in illustration-.

All models:

  • ‒ → Unscrew bolts -1...8- at engine/gearbox flange.
  • ‒ Take off starter.

Note:

The manual gearbox can be detached from the engine without a workshop crane, a 2nd mechanic is required for this purpose.

  • ‒ Remove gearbox from engine.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:

  • ‒ If necessary, secure torque converter in gearbox with wire to prevent it falling out.
