Disassembly

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The new cylinder head is supplied with valves, but with no studs.
    Place the cylinder head on wooden blocks.
  1. Remove the spark plugs.

  1. Remove the inlet manifold.
    • Remove the gasket.

  1. Remove the heat shield.

  1. Detach the exhaust manifold.
    • Remove the gasket.

  1. Remove the EI ignition coil.

  1. Detach the EI coil bracket from the cylinder head.

  1. Remove the thermostat housing.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Stop the timing pulley from turning.
    Remove the camshaft timing belt pulley.
    • Remove the single screw.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lay the parts down in order ready for re-use.
    Remove the rockers.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the valve stem.
    Remove the valve springs.
    • Unseat the collets by lightly tapping the valve spring retainer using a brass drift.
    • Compress the valve spring.
    • Remove the valve collets with Special Tool 21-156.
    • Release the special tool and remove it.
    • Remove the valve spring with the upper valve spring retainer.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lay down the valves in order ready for re-use.
    Remove the lower valve spring retainer with the integrated valve stem seals.

    1. Remove the valves.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lay down the parts in order ready for re-use.
    Remove the hydraulic valve tappets.

  1. Remove the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor).

  1. Remove the camshaft blanking cover and the coolant temperature gauge sender.
    1. Make a hole in the middle of the blanking cover and lever it out.
    1. Coolant temperature gauge sender.

  1. Remove the camshaft.
    1. Unscrew the bolts.
    1. Lift out the camshaft retaining plate.

  1. Remove the camshaft (continued).
    • Carefully slide the camshaft out towards the rear.

  1. Remove the engine lifting eye (one Torx bolt).

  1. Remove the camshaft oil seal.

Assembly

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Renew the studs.
    Install the inlet manifold studs and the sealing flange studs.

  1. Fit new exhaust manifold studs.

  1. Attach the engine lifting eye.

    1. Torx bolt T55

  1. Install the camshaft.
    • Coat the camshaft bearings, the camshaft and the retaining plate with engine oil.
    • Slide the camshaft in carefully.
    1. Install the camshaft retaining plate.
    1. Tighten the bolts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lubricate the hydraulic valve tappets with hypoid oil.
    Install the hydraulic valve tappets.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Lubricate the valve stems with hypoid oil.
    Install the valves.
    1. Mask the collet grooves on the valve stem with adhesive tape.
    1. Coat the valve stem seals with engine oil and install them.
    • Remove the adhesive tape.
  1. Install the lower valve spring retainer with the integrated valve stem seals.

  1. Install the valve springs.
    • Put the valve springs and upper valve spring retainers in position.
    • Compress the valve springs.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:The collets must be correctly seated.
    • Insert the valve collets using Special Tool 21-156.
    • Release the special tool and remove it.

  1. Seat the collets.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not turn the crankshaft for approx. 15 minutes after the rockers are installed.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Check that the rocker guides are sitting correctly. Use new self-locking nuts.
    Install the rockers.

  1. Install a new oil seal.
    1. Radial oil seal
    1. Timing belt pulley bolt
    • Coat the oil seal lip and the camshaft running surface with engine oil.
    • Insert the oil seal in the special tool and draw it in as far as it will go using the timing belt pulley bolt.

  1. Install a new blanking cover and coolant temperature gauge sender using sealer (WSK-M4G320-A).

  1. Fit the CMP sensor.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Apply sealer (WSK-M4G320-A) to the thread of the new bolt.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Stop the camshaft timing pulley from turning.
    Fit the camshaft timing belt pulley.

  1. Fit the thermostat housing using a new gasket.

  1. Fit the bracket of the EI ignition coil.

  1. Fit the EI ignition coil.

  1. Fit the exhaust manifold with a new gasket.

  1. Attach the heat shield.

  1. Fit the inlet manifold together with a new gasket.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Apply lubricant (Never Seeze, ESE-M1244-A) to the spark plug threads.
    Fit the spark plugs.
    • Push on the spark plug connectors.
