Removal

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Standard preparatory measures.
    • Make a note of the radio keycode.
    • Make a note of the preset radio stations.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. Remove the battery.
    1. Detach battery positive lead.
    1. Remove battery positive lead from battery.
    1. Remove bracket.
    1. Remove insulating tape (if fitted).

  1. Remove the battery box
    • Unclip battery cable.
    • Remove screws.
  1. Raise the vehicle.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:There is a risk of scalding when the engine is warm.
    Drain the coolant.
    • After draining, screw in the drain plug.

  1. Slacken the drive belt and remove it.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. On each side loosen the suspension strut top nut five turns.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Turn the spark plug connectors before disconnecting. Pull only the connector not the cable.
    Remove the throttle cable.
    • Remove the clip.
    • Disconnect the throttle cable.
    • Disconnect the spark plug connectors for cylinders 1 and 2.

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    1. Disconnect the rubber ring.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    1. Disconnect the hose.
    1. Pull out the breather hose.

  1. Remove the coolant hose.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses.

  1. Remove the coolant hose and cable.
    1. Coolant temperature gauge sender.
    1. Negative lead.

  1. Disconnect the pipes.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Plug the fuel pipes.
    Disconnect the fuel pipes.

  1. Separate/disconnect the multiplugs.
    1. Engine wiring harness.
    1. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
    1. EI ignition coil.

  1. Remove the ground cable.
    • Pull out the oil dipstick.

  1. Remove the ground cable and separate/disconnect the multiplug.
    1. Reversing light switch.
    1. Crankshaft position sensor (CKP sensor).

  1. Remove the speedometer drive cable.

  1. Detach the pipes and hoses from the power steering pump.

  1. Secure condensor - air conditioning at lock panel and cable tie (left-hand side shown).
    • Remove radiator grille.
  1. Raise the vehicle.

  1. Separate the plug and remove the ground cable.
    • Unclip cable and remove cable tie from radiator crossmember.

  1. Disconnect the plug from the oil pressure switch.

  1. Remove lower radiator shield.

  1. Detach the air conditioning condensor.

  1. Detach the coolant hoses.

  1. Remove the radiator (two screws per side; right-hand side shown.
    • Carefully pull down the radiator, crossmember and fan shroud with cooling fan.

  1. Remove the air conditioning compressor.

  1. Separate the exhaust system.

  1. Separate the exhaust pipe
    • Remove the gasket.
  1. Detach the shift rod from the transaxle selector shaft.
    • Undo the clamp bolt and pull off the shift rod.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:There is a washer between the gearshift stabiliser bar and the transaxle housing.
    Detach the gearshift stabiliser bar and shift rod from the transaxle.
    1. Stabiliser bar.
    1. Shift rod .

  1. Remove the engine roll restrictor.

  1. Detach the left and right suspension arms from the spindle carriers (right-hand side shown).

  1. Detach the vibration damper - lower suspension arm.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18°, the outer at more than 45°.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Fluid may escape. Seal off the transaxle openings with suitable plugs.
    Press the left-hand front driveshaft out of the transaxle, pivot it forwards and tie it up.

  1. Release the front driveshaft centre bearing.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18°, the outer at more than 45°.
    Remove the right-hand front driveshaft from the transaxle.
      CAUTION:
      CAUTION:After releasing the front driveshaft, immediately prevent the differential from turning with suitable plugs.
    • Lightly tap the right-hand front driveshaft to release it from the transaxle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not damage the gaiters of the driveshaft.
    Tie up the right-hand front driveshaft towards the back.
  1. Steps prior to engine removal.
    • Position the assembly table with wooden blocks under the engine/transaxle assembly.
    • Lower the vehicle until engine and transaxle are supported by the wooden blocks.
    • Secure the engine on the assembly table using securing straps.

  1. Remove the front engine mounting bracket.

  1. Detach the hydraulic pipe of the clutch operating system.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Brake fluid can escape.
    1. Remove the spring clip and pull the hydraulic pipe off.
    1. Remove the hydraulic pipe from the bracket.

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting from the transaxle.
    • Pull out the transaxle breather.
    • Unscrew the nuts.
  1. Raise vehicle and remove the assembly table from under the vehicle.

  1. Attach the engine lifting tackle.
  1. Lift the engine/transaxle with a suitable floor crane.

  1. Remove the flange bolts.

  1. Remove the starter motor and the flange bolts.

  1. Remove the flange bolts.
  1. Separate the engine from the transaxle.
