Installation

All Vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The torque converter hub must be engaged fully in the oil pump drive gear.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The locations of engine and transaxle mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
    Check the installation depth of the torque converter.
    1. Lay a steel straightedge across the automatic transaxle flange.
    1. Check the installation depth between the transaxle flange and the torque converter centering spigot for the correct clearance.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the entire installation procedure. Check that the adapter plate is in the correct position.
    Using the transmission jack install the transaxle.
    • Make sure the studs on the torque converter are entered into the engine drive plate and loosely install in the transaxle retaining flange bolts.
    • Remove the securing straps.

  1. Install the upper transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Install the lower transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Install the right-hand side transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Install the left-hand side transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Attach the torque converter to the flywheel with new retaining nuts (four nuts).
    • Install the rubber cover.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Install the engine and transaxle mount bracket.

  1. Install the engine and transaxle mount.

  1. Remove the special tools.

  1. Install the bulkhead cover.

  1. Install the plastic cover to the hood.

  1. Connect the automatic transmission control electrical connector.
    • Install the cable ties.
    • Attach the wiring harness retaining clip.

  1. Connect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

  1. Install the starter motor.

  1. Install the wiring harness and fluid cooler pipe bracket.
    • Attach the fluid cooler pipe.
    • Attach the wiring harness.

  1. Connect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector (colored white).
    • Install the wiring retaining clip.
Vehicles built up to 03/2003

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use an open-ended wrench on the fluid line adaptor to prevent it from turning.
    Attach the fluid cooler pipe to the transaxle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use an open-ended wrench on the fluid line adaptor to prevent it from turning.
    Attach the fluid cooler pipe to the transaxle.
    • Attach the fluid pipe bracket to the transaxle.
Vehicles built 03/2003 onwards

  1. Connect the fluid cooler pipes.
All vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Attach the left-hand front drive halfshaft.
    • Before fully engaging the halfshaft in the transaxle remove the halfshaft seal protection sleeve.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Attach the right-hand front drive halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
    1. Push the intermediate shaft into the output flange.
    1. Install a new centre bearing cap and retaining nuts.

  1. Connect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector (colored black).
Vehicles with high intensity discharge headlamps

  1. Connect the headlamp levelling sensor electrical connector.
All vehicles

  1. Install the accessory drive belt cover.
  1. Install the subframe.

  1. Install the radiator splash shield.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Attach the selector lever cable to the transaxle.
    1. Install the selector lever cable bracket.
    1. Attach the selector lever cable.
  1. Install the air cleaner.
  1. Refill the transaxle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from rotating.
    Tighten the suspension top mount nuts, on both sides.

  1. Install the strut and spring assembly top mount brace cover, on both sides.

  1. Install the engine upper cover.

  1. Install the pipes, attach the pipes and hoses to the engine upper cover.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable.

  1. Initialize the door window motors.
    For additional information, refer to: Door Window Motor Initialization (501-11 Glass, Frames and Mechanisms, General Procedures).
