Removal

All Vehicles
NOTE:
NOTE:The locations of engine and transaxle mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    For additional information, refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

  1. Detach the pipes and hoses from the engine upper cover.

  1. Remove the engine upper cover.

  1. Remove the strut and spring assembly top mount brace cover, on both sides.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from rotating.
    Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount nut by five turns, on both sides.
  1. Remove the air cleaner.

  1. Detach the selector lever cable from the transaxle.
    1. Remove the selector lever cable bracket.
    1. Detach the selector lever cable.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

  1. Remove the radiator splash shield.
  1. Remove the subframe.
    For additional information, refer to: Subframe (502-00 Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System, Removal and Installation).

  1. Remove the accessory drive belt cover.

  1. Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
    • Discard the gasket.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
Vehicles with high intensity discharge headlamps

  1. Disconnect the headlamp levelling sensor electrical connector.
All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The output shaft speed (OSS) electrical connector color is black.
    Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Detach the right-hand front drive halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
    1. Remove the centre bearing cap.
    1. Remove the intermediate shaft from the transaxle.
    • Using cable ties, secure the right-hand front drive halfshaft.
    • Using a suitable plug, close off the transaxle opening.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Detach the left-hand front drive halfshaft.
    • Using the special tool, detach the halfshaft from the transaxle.
    • Using cable ties, secure the left-hand front drive halfshaft.
    • Using a suitable plug, close off the transaxle opening.
Vehicles built up to 03/2003

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Prevent the fluid pipe adapter from turning using an open-ended wrench, do not remove it from the transaxle housing.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Cap the fluid cooler openings to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Detach the fluid cooler pipe from the transaxle.
    • Detach the fluid pipe bracket from the transaxle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Prevent the fluid pipe adapter from turning using an open-ended wrench, do not remove it from the transaxle housing.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Cap the fluid cooler openings to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Detach the fluid cooler pipe from the transaxle.
Vehicles built 03/2003 onwards

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the fluid cooler pipes.
    1. Insert the special tool into the quick release coupling.
    1. Slide the special tool along the pipe to release the locking tangs.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
    • Remove the cable retaining clip.

  1. Remove the wiring harness and fluid cooler pipe bracket.
    • Detach the fluid cooler pipe.
    • Detach the wiring harness.

  1. Remove the starter motor.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the automatic transmission control electrical connector.
    • Remove the wiring harness retaining clip.
    • Remove the cable ties.

  1. Remove the plastic cover from the hood.

  1. Remove the bulkhead cover.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the coating of the fender.
    Install the special tools.
    • Secure the engine.

  1. Detach the engine and transaxle mount.

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle mount bracket.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

    Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

  1. Remove the rubber cover and the four torque converter to engine drive plate nuts.
    • Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining nuts.
    • Discard the nuts

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use a suitable wooden block and securing straps.
    Using a transmission jack and wooden block support the transaxle.

  1. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts (transaxle removed for clarity).
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the torque converter remains in the transaxle.
    Using a transmission jack lower the transaxle.
