Removal

  1. Remove the halfshaft retaining nut locking ring.
    • Discard the cotter pin.

  1. Loosen the halfshaft retaining nut.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. Discard the halfshaft retaining nut and washer.

  1. Loosen the lower ball joint retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Using a suitable two leg puller, detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Use a soft faced hammer to strike the lower arm.
    1. Remove and discard the retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 21 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tools, detach the halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Using a suitable universal hub puller, detach the halfshaft from the wheel hub and remove the halfshaft.

Installation

  1. Using the special tool, attach the halfshaft to the wheel hub.

  1. Using the special tool, pull the halfshaft onto the wheel hub.
  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 21 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the snap ring is correctly seated.
    Attach the halfshaft to the transaxle.
    • Remove the special tools before completely installing the transmission.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new lower arm ball joint retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Attach the lower arm to the wheel knuckle.
  1. Install the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Not following the work instruction leads to destruction of the components.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that a new halfshaft retaining nut and a new halfshaft washer is installed.
    Install the halfshaft retaining nut and washer.
    Tighten the halfshaft retaining nut in 5 stages:
    1. Rotate the wheel 5 times.
    1. Tighten the halfshaft retaining nut to 250 Nm.
    1. Rotate the wheel 5 times.
    1. Fully tighten the halfshaft retaining nut to 500 Nm.
    1. Rotate the wheel 5 times.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new cotter pin.
    Install the halfshaft retaining nut locking ring.
    • Install the cotter pin.
  1. With the vehicle on a level surface, fill the transaxle until the oil level is just below the bottom of the filler hole.
