Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Retractor, Rear Brake Caliper Piston - all other than 460 series vehicles

Removal

CAUTION:
CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Release the parking brake cable

  1. Detach the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.
    • Torque: All other than 460 series vehicles 31 Nm
    • 460 series vehicles 34 Nm

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Note the position of the brake pads to aid installation.
    Remove the brake pads (brake caliper shown removed for clarity).
    1. Disconnect the pad wear indicator.
    1. Release the brake pads from the clips.
    • Remove and discard the clips.

Installation

All vehicles
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When the brake caliper pistons are retracted to the piston housing, brake fluid will be displaced into the brake fluid reservoir.
460 Series vehicles
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To retract the left-hand side or right-hand sidebrake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston counterclockwise.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the brake caliper against the brake caliper bracket and the spring during brake caliper piston retraction.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:This step requires the aid of another technician.
    Using a standard tool, retract the brake caliper piston.
All vehicles
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To retract the left-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston counterclockwise.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To retract the right-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston clockwise.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the brake caliper against the brake caliper bracket and the spring during brake caliper piston retraction.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:This step requires the aid of another technician.
    Using the special tool, retract the brake caliper piston.
    • Centralize the brake caliper piston and make sure that the piston boot is correctly located.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the brake pad contact points are clean and free of foreign material.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new brake caliper retaining bolts.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:460 series vehicles brake pads don't have any adhesive foil
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Depress and release the brake pedal 3 times, check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir and top up as necessary with brake fluid.
  1. Adjust the parking brake cable.
