  Note
t  Always replace cylinder head bolts.
t  When conducting repairs sealant residues should be removed from the contact surface of the cylinder head using a chemical cleaner.
t  Remove the new cylinder head seal from its wrapping immediately before fitting.
t  Treat the new seal with the utmost care. Damage to the silicone layer and in the area of the bead results in leakages.
t  There must not be any oil or coolant present in the threaded holes for the cylinder head bolts.
   
–  Set the camshafts to TDC for cylinder 1 before attaching the cylinder head -arrows-.

–  Once again check if the crankshaft is on TDC for cylinder 1 -arrows-.

–  Slacken bolts -1-, -2- and -3- at the turbocharger bracket by about 2 turns in order to avoid any stresses when installing the cylinder head.

–  Position the new cylinder head gasket:
t  Pay attention to centring pins in cylinder block -arrows-.
t  Observe fitting position: The side with the marking of the spare part no. must point to the cylinder head.
–  Screw the bolts -T30011/2A- into the holes for the cylinder head bolts 8 and 10 and fit the cylinder head.
–  Screw the 8 new cylinder head bolts into the free holes and tighten by hand.
–  Unscrew the bolts using the removal tool -T30011/3-.
–  Screw in the remaining 2 new cylinder head bolts and tighten by hand.

–  Tighten cylinder head bolts with a wrench (e.g. -3452-) or with a socket insert -T10070-) in the tightening order shown as follows:
t  First of all tighten all bolts to 40 Nm.
t  Then, torque all bolts a further 90° (1/4 turn) with a rigid wrench.
t  Once again turn all bolts a further 90° (1/4 turn).
Further installation occurs in reverse order to removal:
–  Screw the exhaust turbocharger with a new gasket to the exhaust manifold and bolt the bracket to the cylinder block → Chapter.
–  Install cylinder head cover → Item.
–  Install and tension timing belt → Chapter.
–  Install intake hose → 1.8 ltr./132 kW Engine, Fuel Injection and Ignition System → Rep. Gr.24.
If a new cylinder head has been installed:
–  Replace coolant → Chapter.
  Note
When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, carry out additional operations → Electrical System → Rep. Gr.27.
