Crankshaft Bearing Play, Check (with
Plastigage)
Remove
Detach cylinder block base plate with crankshaft bearing
shells.
Measure
Measure with Plastigage (deformable plastic thread). Plastigage
is available for various tolerance ranges.
Cut thread to bearing width and lay axially between crankshaft
journal and crankshaft bearing shell (arrow).
Attach cylinder block base plate to
cylinder block:
- M8: 25 Nm / 18.5 lbf. ft. + 60°
- M6: 10 Nm / 7.5 lbf. ft. + 60°
The old bolts can be used for the measurement procedure.

Caution
To prevent thread from tearing when removing cylinder block base
plate, remove grease from con-rod journal and lightly oil con-rod
bearing shell. Do not turn crankshaft.
Measure
Detach cylinder block base plate. Measure width of flattened
Plastigage thread with measuring scale (arrow). Do not confuse
millimetres and inches on measuring scale.
Permissible crankshaft bearing play: 0.007 mm to 0.031 mm

|
Clean
Clean con-rod, crankshaft bearing and crankshaft.
Install
Apply an approx. 2 mm (dimension I) thick bead of silicone
sealant (grey) to outer edge of groove (1) on cylinder block base
plate.
Do not apply silicone sealant (grey) to groove or inner
edge!
The cylinder head base plate must be mounted within 10 minutes
of applying the silicon sealant (grey).

Attach cylinder block base plate
hind-tight to cylinder block with new bolts – observe
tightening procedure specified below.
1. |
Tighten inner fastening bolts (M8) for cylinder
block base plate – tightening torque 25 Nm / 18.5 lbf. ft. +
60°. |
2. |
Tighten outer fastening bolts (M6) for cylinder
block base plate – tightening torque 10 Nm / 7.5 lbf. ft. +
60°. |
