Function of Switched Intake System, X 18 XE1 The goal of the engine development work was to combine maximum torque at low engine speeds with attaining a high nominal output at maximum engine speed, while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and emission levels. The switched intake manifold length provides almost ideal torque progression. A shaft located in the intake manifold is equipped with one switchover valve (1) for each cylinder. The switchover valves are actuated according to the engine speed and the load according to a characteristic map stored in the engine control unit. When the engine exceeds a specific speed, all switchover valves are opened (II). The result is optimised torque characteristics, especially in the lower engine speed range.
