S22 Gearbox noise in neutral

With the vehicle stationary, the gear lever in neutral and the engine running, there is a high frequency, low intensity noise in the area of the gearbox. The fault is often accompanied by an oil leak from the gearbox:

2	GEARBOX BEARING CONDITIONS CHECK Overhaul the gearbox Op. 2110B32 . In particular, check the gearbox bearings: they should not show signs of wear	OK	Move onto step 3
2		Bearings worn	Replace the bearings Op. 2110B32 End of diagnosis
3	CLUTCH PLATE CHECK Verify: thrust bearing; clutch plate fouling (oil or grease); that the clutch plate is not distorted; that there is no damage to the pressure plate diaphragm spring; that there is no damage to the flexible coupling springs;	OK	Move onto step 4
		Clutch disc or pressure plate faulty	Replace the clutch plate Op. 1810A20 End of diagnosis
