X12 Engine oil leaks

An engine oil leak is seen with consequent dripping and/or fouling of the engine

Step	Test procedure	Result	Action
0	PRELIMINARY CHECKS Carry out a preliminary visual inspection to locate the component or the area giving rise to the leak. If the visual inspection is not sufficient, wash the engine, dry it and sprinkle talc over the parts concerned: carry out a road test to identify the leak	OK	No leak located:Move onto step 1
0		Leak located	Move directly onto the step concerned End of diagnosis
1	DRAIN PLUG CHECK Check the condition and the seal of the oil drain plug	OK	Move onto step 2
1		Drain plug tightening not correct	Restore the correct tighteningOp. 1020A30 End of diagnosis
2	OIL SUMP CHECK Check: the condition of the oil sump the seal of the sealant between the sump and crankcase that the bolts fixing the sump are correctly tightened	OK	Move onto step 3
		Oil sump damaged or distorted	Replace the oil sumpOp. 1020A20 End of diagnosis
		No sealant or tightening incorrect	Restore the correct tighteningOp. 1020A20 End of diagnosis
3	OIL FILTER CHECK Check: the condition of the oil filter the seal and condition of the seal	OK	Move onto step 4
3		Oil filter damaged or distorted	Replace the oil filter and the sealOp. 1084B30 End of diagnosis
4	OIL PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE CHECK Check the condition of the oil pump pressure relief valve	OK	Move onto step 5
4		Valve stuck in closed position	Replace the oil pumpOp. 1084B16 End of diagnosis
5	ENGINE GASKET CHECK Gain access to the crankshaft and camshaft oil seals Check their seal	OK	Move onto step 6
		Crankshaft seals damaged	Replace the seals concerned (see ENGINE OVERHAUL, Subassembly 1024) End of diagnosis
		Camshaft seals damaged	Replace the seals concerned (see ENGINE OVERHAUL Subassembly 1036) End of diagnosis
6	CORRECT OPERATION CHECK Check that the fault is no longer present	OK	End of diagnosis
6		Fault persists	Incorrect selection of diagnostic procedure
