Description and Operation
Rear Suspension - Saloon
The Escort '91 has a new design of rear axle assembly. Unlike the previous model, the Escort '91 axle beam is designed to twist along its length to accommodate suspension movements. This type of axle is known as the twist beam axle.
The suspension consists of two suspension units that are similar to the McPherson struts used for the front suspension. The twist beam is supported at the forward mounting position by two voided bushes and at the rear position by the lower bushes of the suspension units.
The wheel bearings are of the proven `set rite' design.

Rear Suspension - Wagon
The design of the '96 model year Escort wagon has been revised to improve the inherent anti‐roll stiffness.
The basic design of the Escort wagon rear suspension is similar to the saloon version except that the suspension unit that is used on the saloon is superseded, on the wagon, by a shock absorber and a separate spring to allow extra space in the luggage compartment.
