Removal

All Vehicles
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Pull off the EI coil connector.
    • Unclip the wiring.

  1. Disconnect the intake pipe from the air cleaner.

  1. Disconnect the intake pipe from the throttle body.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Twist the spark plug connectors slightly before disconnecting them. Pull on the connector and not on the cable.
    Pull off the spark plug connectors.
    • Unclip the HT leads and lay them to one side.

  1. Detach the accelerator cable.
    1. Unclip the accelerator cable.
    1. Pull off the clip.
    1. Unhook the accelerator cable from throttle plate lever.

  1. Remove the oil filler cap.
    • Pull the crankcase breather hose off the T-piece.
Vehicles with mass air flow (MAF) sensor

  1. Disconnect the plugs and remove the vacuum lines.
    1. Two plugs (engine wiring loom)
    1. Brake servo vacuum line
    1. Evaporative emission control valve (EVAP) vacuum line
    • Unclip the wiring bracket.
Vehicles with temperature/manifold absolute pressure (T-MAP) sensor

  1. Separate the connectors and pull off the vacuum hoses.
    1. Engine wiring loom plug
    1. Vacuum line - fuel pressure control
    1. Vacuum hose - crankcase ventilation
    1. Brake servo vacuum line
    1. T-MAP sensor connector
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the plugs from the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) and oil pressure switch.

  1. Disconnect the plug of the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor).

  1. Disconnect the coolant hose to the heat exchanger (quick-release fitting).
  1. Remove the oil dipstick tube.
  1. Disconnect the fuel lines. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.

  1. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (CKP sensor) cover.
    • Disconnect the plug from the CKP sensor.

  1. Remove the cable guide.

  1. Remove the intake manifold heat shield (three nuts).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Close off the intake ports with clean, lint-free cloths.
    Detach the intake manifold.
    • Remove the gasket.

Installation

All Vehicles
  1. General note.
    • Renew the self-locking nuts.
    • Thoroughly clean all mating faces and reusable parts and check them for damage.

  1. Attach the intake manifold using a new gasket.

  1. Attach the intake manifold heat shield (three nuts).

  1. Connect the plug of the EI ignition coil.
    • Clip the wiring in place.

  1. Connect the CKP sensor plug.
    • Install the CKP sensor cover.

  1. Attach the cable guide.
  1. Connect the fuel lines. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.

  1. Connect the coolant hose to the heat exchanger (quick-release fitting).
  1. Install the oil dipstick tube.

  1. Connect the ECT sensor plug.

  1. Connect the plugs to the CMP sensor and oil pressure switch.
Vehicles with mass air flow (MAF) sensor

  1. Connect the plugs and install the vacuum lines.
    1. Two plugs (engine wiring loom).
    1. Vacuum line - brake servo.
    1. Vacuum line - EVAP.
    • Clip the wiring bracket in place.
Vehicles with temperature/manifold absolute pressure (T-MAP) sensor

  1. Join the connectors and push on the vacuum hoses.
    1. Engine wiring loom plug.
    1. Vacuum line - fuel pressure control.
    1. Vacuum hose - crankcase ventilation.
    1. Vacuum line - brake servo.
    1. T-MAP sensor connector.
All vehicles

  1. Push on the oil filler cap.
    • Push the crankcase breather hose onto the T-piece.

  1. Attach the throttle cable.
    1. Hook the accelerator cable onto the throttle plate lever.
    1. Push on the clip.
    1. Clip the accelerator cable in place.

  1. Push on the spark plug connectors until they click in place.
    • Clip the ignition cables in place.

  1. Attach the intake pipe to the air cleaner.

  1. Connect the intake pipe to the throttle body.
  1. Finishing operations.
    • Check the routing of cables and hoses and fix them in place with cable ties.
    • Start the engine, bring it up to operating temperature and check for leaks.
