Diagnosis and Testing

Principles of Operation

The anti-theft alarm system is incorporated into and controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM). The GEM can be diagnosed by WDS to identify and correct any concerns found with the anti-theft alarm system.

The anti-theft alarm provides an audible and visual alarm for the following conditions:

  • Unauthorized access to the vehicle is detected.
  • Audio unit electrical connectors are disconnected while the anti-theft alarm system is armed.
  • Ignition switch is turned to position II or position III while the anti-theft alarm system is armed.

The visual anti-theft alarm indictor uses the vehicle turn signal indicators. The GEM will initiate the power supply to the turn signal indicators when unauthorized access to the vehicle is detected.

The audible anti-theft alarm consists of an alarm horn (located in the luggage compartment) which is separate from the vehicle horn. The GEM will initiate the power supply to the alarm horn when the alarm system is triggered.

When the anti-theft alarm system is armed, any unauthorized entry into the vehicle without using a key or keyless entry remote transmitter is detected by a switch being triggered in the door latch(es), liftgate latch, luggage compartment latch and the hood latch.

When the anti-theft alarm system is triggered, the GEM will flash the turn signal indicators for five minutes and sound the alarm horn for 30 seconds, after this time has elapsed the alarm will rearm.

The turn signal indicators and alarm horn are automatically switched off by the GEM.

The pre-arm state is a 20 second delay which allows the customer to open and close any door, hood, liftgate, without triggering the alarm system.

After the 20 second pre-arm state the GEM will check the current switch states of the doors, hood and liftgate. If the doors, hood and liftgate are in a secure state (i.e. closed) the anti-theft alarm system will arm and monitor the switch states.

If a door(s), hood or liftgate are not in a secure state (i.e. open or ajar) the anti-theft alarm system will not arm or monitor the switch until it is closed for a minimum of 20 seconds. If the switch remains closed for over 20 seconds the anti-theft alarm system will arm that switch and monitor its state.

Anti-Theft Alarm System Arming

The arming of the anti-theft alarm system is initiated when all doors are locked either by using the mechanical key in the driver door lock cylinder or the keyless entry remote transmitter.

The GEM will flash the turn signal indicators twice if the vehicle is double locked to confirm the anti-theft alarm system has entered the pre-alarm state.

The GEM will flash the turn signal indicators twice if the vehicle is double locked to confirm the anti-theft alarm system has entered the pre-alarm state.

Anti-Theft Alarm System Disarming an Untriggered/Triggered Alarm

The anti-theft alarm system can be disarmed by carrying out one of the following procedures.

  • Unlock the driver door with a mechanical key.
  • Unlock the door(s) by pressing the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry remote transmitter.

If the liftgate is opened with the key or keyless entry remote transmitter while the alarm is armed the GEM will disable the liftgate alarm triggers. The liftgate must be closed and the 20 second pre-arm state passed before the GEM will rearm the liftgate alarm triggers.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical Electrical
Door, hood or liftgate adjustment Fuse(s)
Latch(es) Bulb(s)
Cable(s)
Actuating rod(s) Wiring harness
Lock cylinder(s) Electrical connector(s)
PATS key Switch(es)
Use of an unprogrammed PATS key PATS transceiver
More than one PATS key on key chain Anti-theft alarm and double locking module
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to WDS to diagnose the system.
