Removal

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section  303-03A Engine Cooling / 303-03B Engine Cooling / 303-03C Engine Cooling / 303-03D Engine Cooling.
  1. Remove the intake manifold assembly.
    For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section.
  1. Remove the timing belt.
    For additional information, refer to Timing Belt in this section.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the brake vacuum pump.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the generator with lint-free material to prevent contamination.
    Using the special tool, remove the coolant hose from the coolant expansion tank.

  1. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Remove the CMP sensor.

  1. Remove the turbocharger heat shield.

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  1. Remove the camshaft housing assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Keep the camshaft roller followers in order for installation.
    Remove the camshaft roller followers.
  1. Position the appropriate piston at top dead center (TDC).

  1. Using the special tools, remove the valve collets.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Keep the valve spring retainers and the valve springs in order for installation.
    Remove the valve springs and the valve spring retainers.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the valve stem seals.
    • Discard the seals.

Installation

WARNING:

  1. Coat the valves with clean hypoid oil.

  1. Install a valve stem protective sleeve over the valve collet groove (valve shown removed for clarity).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only remove the valve stem protective sleeve after the valve seals have been installed.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new valve seals.
    Using the special tool, install the valve seals.
  1. Remove the valve stem protective sleeves.
  1. Install the valve springs and the valve spring retainers.

  1. Using the special tools, install the valve collets.

  1. Install the camshaft roller followers.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the sealer does not enter the cylinder head blind holes. Failure to follow these instruction may result in damage to the cylinder head.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not damage the mating faces.
    Clean the cylinder head upper mating face and the camshaft housing assembly lower mating face with Loctite 7070.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshaft housing assembly within four minutes of applying the sealer.
    Apply a 4 mm diameter bead of sealer to the cylinder head upper mating face.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshaft housing assembly bolts in the sequence shown.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that no piston is at top dead centre (TDC).
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
    Install the camshaft housing assembly.
    • Tighten the bolts in two stages.
    • First stage: 5 Nm.
    • Second stage: 10 Nm.

  1. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  1. Install the turbocharger heat shield.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the camshaft position (CMP) sensor at this stage.
    Install the CMP sensor.

  1. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Turn the camshaft to align the camshaft pulley position indicator with the CMP sensor if necessary.
    Using a feeler gauge, install and adjust the CMP sensor.
    • XX = 1.2 mm between the CMP sensor and the camshaft pulley position indicator.
    • XX = 0.0 mm between the CMP sensor and the camshaft pulley position indicator, when a new CMP sensor is installed.

  1. Using the special tool, install the coolant expansion tank coolant hose.

  1. Connect the vacuum hose to the brake vacuum pump.
  1. Install the timing belt.

  1. Install the intake manifold assembly.
    For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section.
  1. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section  303-03A Engine Cooling / 303-03B Engine Cooling / 303-03C Engine Cooling / 303-03D Engine Cooling.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
