Removal

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Shift the transaxle into first gear.
    Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees.
    Detach the halfshaft from the transaxle output drive flange and secure it to one side.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install two flange bolts diagonally. Using a suitable tire lever, to prevent the transaxle output drive flange from turning.
    Remove the transaxle output drive flange.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Using the special tools, remove the halfshaft oil seal.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Apply half of the area between the inner and outer sealing ring lip with grease (VW G 052 128 A1).
    Using the special tool, install the halfshaft oil seal.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install two flange bolts diagonally. Using a suitable tire lever, to prevent the transaxle output drive flange from turning.
    Install the transaxle output drive flange.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees.
    Attach the halfshaft to the transaxle output drive flange.

  1. Attach the lower arm to the wheel knuckle.
  1. Install the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new transaxle level plug.
    With the vehicle on a level surface fill the transaxle until the oil level is just below the bottom of the filler hole.
