NOTE:The locations of the engine and transaxle mountings and the engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. | | -
Remove the engine undershield. | | -
Remove the gearshift lever knob and boot. | | -
Using a 5 mm drill, lock the gearshift lever. | | -
Remove the upper engine cover. | | -
Remove the slash shield cover. | | -
Disconnect the engine coolant level (ECL) indicator electrical connector. | | -
Disconnect the engine wiring harness and detach it from the battery tray. | | -
Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector. | | -
Remove the battery side cover. | | -
Detach the diesel filter from the battery tray. | | -
Detach the engine wiring harness rail from the battery tray. | | -
Lock the gearshift mechanism. - Depress the selector shaft.
- Press the locking pin into the transaxle.

Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle. - Pull the locking mechanism backwards, turn it counterclockwise.
- Remove the cables, turning the abutment sleeves clockwise.

Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line from the transaxle. | | -
Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector. | | -
Detach the engine lifting bracket. | | -
Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector. | | -
Install the special tools. | | -
Remove the engine rear mount. | | -
Remove the engine rear mount bracket. | | -
Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts. | | -
Using the special tools, lower the engine and transaxle assembly. | | -
Remove the engine support insulator. | | -
Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides. | | -
CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees. Detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle output drive flange and secure it to one side. | | -
CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees. Detach the right-hand halfshaft from the center bearing carrier and secure it to one side. | | -
Remove the center bearing carrier. | | -
Remove the starter motor bracket. | | -
Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors. - Remove the protective cap.
- Detach the positive cable from the starter motor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.

Remove the starter motor. | | -
Remove the right-hand transaxle retaining bolts. | | -
Remove the left-hand transaxle retaining bolts. | | -
- Rotate the transaxle approximately 70 degrees counterclockwise during removal.
