General Equipment
Transmission jack
5 mm drill
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The locations of the engine and transaxle mountings and the engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
    Remove the wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Remove the engine undershield.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the gearshift lever knob and boot.

  1. Using a 5 mm drill, lock the gearshift lever.
  1. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Remove the hood. For additional information, refer to Section  501-02 Front End Body Panels.

  1. Remove the upper engine cover.

  1. Remove the slash shield cover.

  1. Disconnect the engine coolant level (ECL) indicator electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness and detach it from the battery tray.

  1. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector.

  1. Remove the battery side cover.

  1. Detach the diesel filter from the battery tray.

  1. Detach the engine wiring harness rail from the battery tray.

  1. Remove the battery tray.

  1. Lock the gearshift mechanism.
    1. Depress the selector shaft.
    1. Press the locking pin into the transaxle.

  1. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Pull the locking mechanism backwards, turn it counterclockwise.
    1. Remove the cables, turning the abutment sleeves clockwise.

  1. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line from the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  1. Detach the engine lifting bracket.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. Install the special tools.

  1. Remove the engine rear mount.

  1. Remove the engine rear mount bracket.

  1. Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts.
  1. Using the special tools, lower the engine and transaxle assembly.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the engine support insulator.

  1. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees.
    Detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle output drive flange and secure it to one side.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 20 degrees, the outer joint must not be bent at more than 50 degrees.
    Detach the right-hand halfshaft from the center bearing carrier and secure it to one side.

  1. Remove the center bearing carrier.

  1. Remove the starter motor bracket.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
    • Remove the protective cap.
    • Detach the positive cable from the starter motor.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.

  1. Remove the starter motor.

  1. Remove the right-hand transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the left-hand transaxle retaining bolts.

  1. Using a suitable transmission jack, remove the transaxle.
    • Rotate the transaxle approximately 70 degrees counterclockwise during removal.
