Removal

All Vehicles
  1. General notes.
    • Make a note of the radio keycode.
    • Make a note of the pre-programmed radio stations.
      CAUTION:
      CAUTION:Disconnect the battery ground lead.
    • The position markings for the engine mountings and engine roll restrictors are described looking from the transmission towards the engine.
    • Sub-operations for particular variants which do not apply to all vehicles are marked clearly with a note.
    • If necessary, cut cable ties and renew when installing the assembly.

  1. Lock the driver's gear shift lever using the special tool.
    • Shift the gear shift mechanism to neutral.
    • Pull up the boot and bellows.

  1. Secure the radiator in position on both sides.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Prevent the piston rod from moving using a hexagon key.
    Slacken the suspension strut nuts on the right and left-hand sides by five turns.

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    1. Pull off the mass air flow (MAF) sensor connector.
    1. Undo the hose clip.
    1. Pull off the vacuum hose.
    1. Unclip the air cleaner intake.

  1. Detach the power steering pipe from the bracket and pull out the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve hose.

  1. Detach the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:One bolt with ground lead.
    Take out the upper flange bolts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Brake fluid may leak out. Observe the safety procedures for handling brake fluid.
    Detach the pressure line from the clutch slave cylinder.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Close off the apertures with plugs.
    1. Remove the spring clip and pull off the pressure line.
    1. Remove the pressure line from the transmission and tie up.

  1. Disconnect the plug.
    1. From reversing light switch.
    1. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
    1. Detach the wiring harness from the transmission.

  1. Separate two engine main wiring harness connectors.
    • Separate the cable wraps and completely remove the engine main wiring harness.

  1. Attach special tools.
    • Lift the engine and transmission assembly slightly.

  1. Undo the wheel nuts for both wheels.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the engine undershield (if fitted).
  1. Remove the front wheels.

  1. Detach the lower radiator cover.

  1. Remove the right-hand and left-hand wheel arch trim panels (right-hand side shown).
    • Undo one bolt in the upper wheel arch trim panel.
Vehicles with air conditioning

  1. Detach the air conditioning dryer from the subframe and tie it up.
All vehicles

  1. Detach the power steering pipe from the subframe.

  1. Detach the power steering pipe from the subframe (continued).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the boots and the ABS sensor ring.
    Detach the stabiliser link rod from the suspension lower arm ball joint on both sides.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer one no more than 45 degrees.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Lower nut with refrigerant pipe bracket.
    Detach the right-hand front axle driveshaft centre bearing from the bracket, pull out the right-hand front axle driveshaft from the transmission and tie it up.

  1. Remove the catalytic converter.

  1. Detach the right-hand engine roll restrictor from the subframe.
    1. Remove the centre bolt.
    1. Remove the three screws.

  1. Detach the steering gear from the subframe.

  1. Detach the support bracket for the rear engine roll restrictor from the transmission.

  1. Remove the centre bolt for the front engine roll restrictor.

  1. Undo the right-hand and left-hand bumper bar brace on the subframe and swing to one side (right-hand side shown).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the subframe with a transmission jack and wooden blocks.
    Remove the subframe.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees, the outer one no more than 45 degrees.
    Remove the left-hand front axle driveshaft.
    • Loosen the front axle driveshaft.
    • Pull the front axle driveshaft from the transmission and tie up.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Lower the transmission to the height of the side members using special tool 303-290.

  1. Remove the front engine mounting bracket.

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.
    1. Detach the air filter bracket.
    1. Detach the bracket from the transmission.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The starter is not disconnected; it remains in its installed position.
    Detach the starter motor and remove the flange bolts.

  1. Detach the gearshift cable and the selector cable from the transmission.
    1. Shift cable from the gearshift lever.
    1. De-tension the abutment brackets by turning them in a counter-clockwise direction and remove the cable assembly from the bracket.
    1. Detach the selector cable from the gear selector lever.
    1. De-tension the abutment brackets by turning them in a counter-clockwise direction and remove the cable assembly from the bracket.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Push in until the adjustment mechanism clicks into place.
    1. Release the adjustment mechanism by pressing it in.

  1. Remove the front engine roll restrictor bracket.
  1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack, place onto wooden blocks and secure with a retaining strap .

  1. Detach the catalytic converter bracket and unscrew the flange bolts on the left-hand side of the transmission.
  1. Separate the transmission from the engine and lower it with a transmission jack .
