Pinion Flange: Service and Repair

Drive Pinion Yoke Replacement
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 8614-01 Companion Flange Holder
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the rear wheels.
3. Remove the drums, if equipped.
4. Remove the rear rotors, if equipped.
5. Remove the propeller shaft.
6. Measure the amount of torque required in order to turn the pinion. Use an inch-pound torque wrench. Record this measurement for reassembly.
This will provide the combined preload for the following components:

The pinion bearing
-
The seal
-
The carrier bearing
-
The axle bearing
-
The seal
7. Draw an alignment mark on the following components:
-
The pinion stem
-
The pinion flange
-
The pinion flange nut
8. Record the number of exposed threads on the pinion stem for reference.
9. Remove the pinion flange nut and washer. Hold the pinion flange using a J 8614-01.
