NOTE: The Special Service Tools (SSTs) required to complete these procedures are a J 8947 rack piston teflon ring compressor
and a J 21332 rack piston arbor.
PROCEDURE
1. Install the O-ring seal (6) and teflon ring (5) and lubricate them with power steering fluid.
2. Attach the worm shaft (13) to the rack piston (26) outside of the housing (20)and do the following, fully seat the worm shaft (13) to the rack piston
(26) and align the worm shaft spiral groove with the rack piston ball return guide hole (see Figure 20).
CAUTION: Make sure that all rack piston balls (25) are reinstalled in the rack piston. Improper rack piston ball installation may result in personal
injury.
NOTE:

The black rack piston balls are smaller than the silver balls. The black and silver balls must be installed alternately into the rack piston and
ball guide to maintain rack piston to worm shaft preload.

Lubricate the rack piston balls (25) with power steering fluid.
3. Install the rack piston balls (25) to the rack piston (26) by inserting them through the ball return guide hole while turning the worm shaft (13)
counterclockwise.
