Remove steering rack, cover plate, spring washer, adjusting shims, O-ring, cup, washer, spring and plunger, Fig. 1.
2.
Clean all components.
3.
Coat plunger with ``MECA GRAISSE BD 250'' grease or equivalent, then install plunger (8), washer (6) and spring (7), Fig. 2.
4.
Install dial indicator support on rack, using an 8mm 0 drill bit to center.
5.
Install dial indicator with extension tool No. 0703-J2 or equivalent.
6.
Slide rack from one stop to the other several times.
7.
Position tie rod fork shaft center line 5.1 inches from end of rack. This should be midway in travel, Fig. 3.
8.
With dial indicator, read point of max depth registered, by operating rack over a 1.8 or (30mm) span from mid point.
9.
Position rack at MAX point read, then zero dial indicator face with long needle.
10.
The difference between MAX and MIN depth must be, 0.13mm over a 30mm span from midway travel or 0.18mm over total travel of rack.
11.
If the readings are not as specified, a new or rebuilt rack assembly is required.
12.
Rotate rack inside steering rack housing. Note needle travel on dial indicator.
