Torsion Bar: Service and Repair
Front Suspension
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove wheels and torsion bar adjustment screw.
3.
Remove seal and torsion bar adjusting lever from torsion bar.
4.
Remove forward rubber mount cover.
5.
Using a suitable punch, drive torsion bar forward out of lower control arm. Use caution to avoid damaging the torsion bar splines. Check for
rust or damage to the torsion bar finish. Coat torsion bar with lithium grease before installing.
6.
Install torsion bar in lower control arm.
Torsion bars are under tension during production. Torsion bars are marked with either ``L'' or ``R'' on their end face. Install bars marked with
``L'' in left hand side of vehicle and bars marked with ``R'' in right hand side of vehicle.
7.
Install seal on torsion bar.
8.
Install adjusting lever on torsion bar as follows:
a. Using a pry bar, pull the lower control arm as far down as the attached shock absorber strut will allow.
b. Slide torsion bar adjusting lever with end cap installed onto the torsion bar splines. Leave as little clearance at the lever adjusting point as
possible.
c. Coat adjusting screw threads with MoS2 grease and lightly tighten screw.
9.
Check that end cap is properly seated in control arm.
10.
Install rubber mount cover bracket. Torque the retaining bolts to 34 ft.lbs.
11.
Adjust front end height and check wheel alignment.
