- Using a micrometer positioned 10 mm, 0.4 in from the outer edge of the disc, measure the the thickness of the disc at four points.
Data: Disc thickness:
Disc, new = 10 mm, 0.393 in
Disc, service limit = 8 mm, 0.314 in
Disc thickness variation = 0.015 mm, 0.0006 in.
- Renew brake disc if below service limits or disc thickness variation is outside tolerances.
Note: Brake discs must be renewed in pairs, unless one disc requires changing at 1000 mile (1500 km) service. In this situation renewal of one disc is permissible.
- Position dial test indicator 6 mm, 0.25 in from disc outer edge.
- Rotate disc and measure disc run – out.
Rear disc run – out limit = 0.060 mm , 0.0024 in. - If run – out exceeds limit, remove 2 screws retaining disc and remove disc from flange. Rotate disc 180° and refit disc to flange, securing disc with screws. Re – check run – out.
- Renew disc if run – out exceeds limit even after repeated re – positioning of disc on hub.
Note: Brake discs can be refaced using an on car disc lathe providing the disc thicknes is sufficiently great to be 1 mm over service limit after machining.
- Wipe pads and shims clean, then lightly grease backs of pads.
