OPERATION
Drive from the power unit is transmitted to the front wheels by the drive shafts (1). Both drive shafts are fitted with dynamic dampers (2) to reduce harmonic vibration. The inner joint (3) is of the tripod type with spherical bushing to reduce sliding resistance. On 1.6 models the inner joint can be serviced separate from the shaft, but on 1.4 and 2.0 models shaft and inner joint are one assembly. The outer joint (4) is of the ball and socket type. The joints are sealed and pre – packed with grease.
1.4 and 2.0 models utilise unequal length drive shafts, whereas 1.6 models incorporate an intermediate shaft between the differential and L.H. drive shaft. This allows drive shafts of equal length.
The intermediate shaft is supported in a floating type bearing (5) which is bolted to the cylinder block.
