Adjusting
Adjusting

–  Fit the outer ring of the roller bearing to the torque converter housing without shims tools, using tool -U-40200/10- and -U-40300/12-.
–  Fit the differential in the gearbox casing.
–  Fit the torque converter casing on top and tighten the bolts to 30 Nm.
  E39-0242
–  Fit the dial gauge bracket.
–  Adjust the dial gauge to “0” with a pre-tension of 1 mm.
–  Move the differential up and down.
–  Read the play measured on the gauge and take note.
  Note!
When measuring, do not turn the differential, because the roller bearings may settle and the reading could be erroneous.
Determining thickness of shim
The pre-tension of the bearings is obtained by adding a constant pressure value (0.16 mm) to the obtained measurement value.
Example
  E39-0243
Measured value0.94 mm
+ Pressure (const. value)0.16 mm
=Thickness of shim1.1 mm

–  Unbolt the torque converter casing and remove the differential from the gearbox casing.

–  Remove the outer ring of the small roller bearing with tool -T20140-
Procedure for extracting the outer ring → , General instructions for gearbox repairs.
–  Determining shim thicknesses according to the table:
Spare no.: → Parts Catalogue.
Table “Shims”:
  E39-0271
Shims (mm)
0.120.400.72
0.140.440.76
0.160.480.80
0.200.520.84
0.240.560.88
0.280.600.92
0.320.640.98
0.360.681.44

If the thickness needed is greater than that indicated on the table, two shims can be used to attain the value.

–  Press fit the outer ring of the roller bearing to the torque converter housing with established shims (in the example 1.1 mm) using tools -U-40200/10- and -U-40300/12-.
