Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ VW 454 Press piece
  • ◆ V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench
  • ◆ V.A.G 1576 Torque wrench
  • ◆ V.A.G 1383 A Engine/gearbox jack

Removing

Freewheel must be locked to remove rear propshaft.

  • ‒ Raise vehicle.
  • ‒ To build up a vacuum for the positioning element start engine and run for approx. 30 seconds.
  • ‒ Engage reverse gear.
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.
  • ‒ Switch on ignition.
  • ‒ Turn rear wheels forwards. The freewheel lock will audibly engage immediately when doing this.
  • ‒ Pull on handbrake.
  • ‒ Remove rear propshaft section .
  • ‒ Lever out viscous coupling/shaft bevel gear seal using a screwdriver.

N39-0411
  • ‒ → Remove centralising nut using socket insert -A-.
  • ‒ Place gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A under final drive and support final drive.

N39-0352
  • ‒ → Remove bolt (arrow).
  • ‒ Unclip cable and vacuum pipes/hoses.
  • ‒ Lower final drive slightly.

N39-0358
  • ‒ → Remove upper bolts (arrows).
  • ‒ Lower final drive further.
  • ‒ Pull off viscous coupling.

Installing

N39-0361

Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence, when doing this note the following:

  • ‒ Lubricate new viscous coupling/shaft bevel gear seal outer diameter with gear oil.
  • ‒ Fill gap between sealing and dust lips with multi-purpose grease.
  • ‒ → Drive in new oil seal as far as stop with VW 454.
  • ‒ Install viscous coupling centralizing nut with locking compound D 000 600 A2.

V39-1817

→ Do not damage propshaft centring sleeve seal during installation. Propshaft must not be canted, but push horizontally onto the centring pin. If damaged renew propshaft according to parts catalogue.

  • ‒ Checking rear final drive oil
