Test the functioning and the voltage supply
Test the functioning and the voltage supply
–  Remove the protector from the fuel elevation unit.
–  Switch on the ignition. The fuel pump should be heard to start running (in event of repeating the test, let at least 10 sec. pass).
–  Switch off the ignition.
If the fuel pump does not start up:
–  Remove the fuse holder cover.
–  Remove the fuel pump relay -J17- from the relay panel with fuse holder (relay point 8).
  Note!
If the relay cannot be removed from the relay panel without a tool, first disconnect the battery earth strap. For this purpose, check whether the vehicle has a coded radio and, if so, consult the antitheft code.

–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3 A- with the cable adaptor -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to contact 2 to the fuel pump and to the battery, positive terminal (+).
–  Activate the remote control.
The fuel pump works:
–  Test the excitation of the fuel pump relay with the wiring diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The fuel pump does not work:
–  Fold the rear seat forward.
–  Remove the cover from the fuel supply unit.
Once the cover is installed:
  E20-0050
–  Remove the 4-contact connector -1- from the fuel tank flange -2-.
–  Connect diode lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- with auxiliary leads -V.A.G 1594- to the outer contacts of the connector.
–  Activate the remote control. The diode lamp should light up.
The diode lamp does not light up:
–  Find and eliminate the open circuit in the wiring proceeding according to the wiring diagrams: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The diode lamp lights up (voltage supply OK):
  E20-0013
–  Remove the connection nut with spanner -U-40055 A-.
–  Check that the wiring between the flange and the fuel pump is connected.
If no open circuit in the wiring is detected:
–  Fuel pump faulty, replace the fuel supply unit → Chapter.
