t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-
Removal:
–  Note safety precautions before beginning work → Chapter.
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. If so, obtain anti-theft coding.
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
–  Open fuel flap and remove fuel tank cap.
–  Remove the airbag unit: → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.55.
–  Drain fuel tank and clean fuel filler neck and surrounding area.

–  Unbolt filler neck from body -arrows-.
  WARNING
Fuel supply pipes are pressurised. Wear eye protection and gloves to avoid injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.

–  Disconnect supply line -1- (black) and breather line -2- (white) at connecting point.
  Note
Release connection by pressing button on hose coupling.
–  Detach connector -4- for fuel pump control unit -J538-.
–  Pull off fuel line -3- (if there is one) for metering pump -V54- for auxiliary heater.
  Note
Release connection by pressing button on hose coupling.
–  Disconnect ventilation line and breather line at connecting point → Item.
  Note
Release connection by pressing button on hose coupling.
–  Unscrew securing strap and securing bolts. When doing this, support fuel tank with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–  Drain fuel tank carefully until the breather line between body and heat shield can be disconnected.
  Note
Release connection by pressing button on hose coupling.
–  Then, carefully lower the fuel tank further. With the aid of a 2nd mechanic, guide the filler neck in between rear axle and body.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
  N20-10797
t  Do not interchange supply and return hose (return line -1- blue or blue markings, supply -2- black).
t  Connections for breather and fuel lines must engage audibly when joined.
t  Clip fuel lines onto fuel tank.
t  Breather and fuel hoses are to be installed kink-free.
t  Ensure that connectors and fuel hose connections are fitted securely.
t  Check earth connection on fuel tank and body to filler neck.
