Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  fault reader -V.A.G 1551-
  W00-0459
t  cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
  Note!
t  Instead of the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- , it is also possible to use the vehicle system checker -V.A.G 1552-, although in this case the data can not be printed.
t  All the functions of the -V.A.G 1551/1552- may also be carried out with the new -VAS 5051- diagnostic unit. Turn on the -VAS 5051- → Chapter.
Checking condition
  W00-0047
l  Fuse number 20, correct.
l  Battery voltage, 11.5 V minimum.
l  Ground connections in the water box, correct.
l  Ground connections between the engine (gearbox housing) and bodywork (under the battery), correct.
l  All electrical consumers, for example: the lights and heated windscreen, must be turned off.
Sequence of operations
–  Remove the object tray, driver side.
  E01-0119
–  Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (or -V.A.G 1552-) using the -V.A.G 1551/3B- cable.
Once the fault reader has been connected:
–  Depending on the required function is it necessary to:
turn on the ignition or start the engine → Anchor, “Selectable functions” table.
  Note!
If no message appears on the display, the voltage supply of the diagnosis connector must be checked in accordance with the fault location program → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations überprüft werden.
t  If the message does not appear on the display with the sequence of operations: → Fault reader use instructions.
t  If, due to a keying error, we have the message “Error in data transmission”, the cable must be removed from the fault reader, reconnected and the operation sequence must be repeated.
–  Run the fault reader bearing in mind the indication on the display:

* the following appear alternately.
–  Press key 1 for “Fast data transmission”.
–  Press keys 0 and 1 for the direction code “Engine electronics” and confirm the entry with Q.
 
V.A.G. - SELG-DIAGNOSIS             HELP
2 - Intermittent code transmission*     
–  The display of the -V.A.G 1551- fault reader shows the identification of the control unit, for example:
t  038906013AN = reference number of the control unit (see Spares Catalogue to see the current version)
t  1,9 1 = engine size
t  R4 = engine architecture (4 cylinders in a line)
t  EDC = injection system (Diesel Electronic Control)
t  SG = Gearbox type: manual gearbox
t  2168 = software version of the control unit
t  Coding 00002 = coding of the control unit
t  WSC xxxxx = identification of the V.A.G. unit workshop where the last coding was undertaken (While the factory coding is not modified, WSC 00000 will appear.)
–  Press the key .
