Indications regarding repairs to the anti-lock brake system (ABS)
t  Before repairing the anti-lock brake system, investigate the reason for the fault using the vehicle diagnostic, measuring and information system -VAS 505X- and the “Guided fault finding” function.
t  Disconnect battery earth cable only with ignition switched off. On vehicles with coded radio, obtain and observe the anti-theft coding.
t  After disconnecting, the following work is necessary depending on the vehicle equipment: Code radio, set clock, synchronise power window motors.
t  Before soldering with an electric soldering gun, observe the following safety precautions → Bodywork - repair.
t  When handling brake fluid, observe safety precautions and current regulations, → Chapter.
t  Always bleed the brake system with the Brake bleeder -SAT 1175B- after conducting work involving opening the brake system → Chapter.
t  During the test drive make sure that the at least one braking action activates the ABS system (pulsations should be felt in the brake pedal).
t  Work on the ABS system demands the highest levels of cleanliness; under no circumstances should auxiliary materials that contain mineral oils be used, such as oil, grease etc.
t  Thoroughly clean the connections and the surrounding areas before separating, but do not use strong abrasive cleaning products such as brake cleaner, petrol, solvents or similar products.
t  Place parts that have been removed on a clean base and cover them over.
t  After having separated the control unit from the hydraulic unit, use transport protection for the valve stems.
t  Cover or plug the open parts carefully if the repair is not going to be carried out immediately (use the repair plugs → Parts catalogue).
t  Use lint-free cloths.
t  Only take spares out of their packaging just before assembly.
t  Only use replacement parts which come in their original packaging.
t  If the system is open, do not use compressed air and do not move vehicle.
t  Make sure that brake fluid does not enter the connectors.
