Safety functions of the gearbox control unit
If one or more components or sensors stop working, the gearbox control unit activates the corresponding replacement functions. This ensures the continued working of the gearbox without risk of damage, nor of repercussions to the working and quality of the gear shifts.
The gearbox records 4 different fault responses.
t  1°: The fault is stored and a replacement programme allows continued running (with some restrictions). The driver is not informed of the fault response, as it is not critical to either the gearbox or to driving safety. The gear speed indicator on the instrument panel displays the position of the selector lever at all times normally. The driver may possibly realise that something is wrong, from the behaviour of the vehicle when running, and will automatically go to a Seat Dealer.
t  2: Some of the selector lever positions flash on the gearspeed indicator on the instrument panel. This advises the driver that this gear may not be selected at present. This occurs, for example, when “D” is engaged while reversing (the selector lever is in “R” and the vehicle is still moving backwards). In this case, position “D” of the selector lever on the gear speed indicator on the instrument panel will flash. The gearbox control unit prevents 1st gear from engaging in order to avoid damage to the gearbox. 1st gear engages once the vehicle has come to a stop.
t  3: All of the gearspeed indicator positions on the instrument panel are lit up and flashing. It is possible to identify the actual position of the selector lever on the instrument panel, e.g. “D”, because it will be brighter. In this case, the gear has been submitted to excess force or the maximum gear shift temperature has been exceeded (excess temperature), as may occur, for example, when driving with a trailer and the load is too heavy.
t  4: If all of the gearspeed indicators on the instrument panel are lit up and flashing, this is an indication of a serious fault in the gearbox. It is no longer possible to determine the position of the selector lever from the instrument panel indicator. This is a critical condition for driving safety or for the gearbox. It may be that, in some cases, it is no longer possible to engage any of the gears. The gearspeed indicator flashes to warn the driver that he should go directly to a Seat Dealer.
