Testing the compression
Testing the compression
Test condition
l  Engine oil temperature at least 30°C
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Compression tester, e.g. -V.A.G 1381- or -V.A.G 1763-
t  Adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1381/12-
t  Flexible-head wrench for glow plugs
Test sequence
   
–  Remove engine cover.
   Pull the front and rear engine cover upwards with a sudden motion -arrows-.
–  Disconnect the 10-pin plug connection on the injection pump.
–  Remove all glow plugs with the flexible-head wrench for glow plugs.

–  Screw in the adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1381/12-, instead of the relevant glow plug.
–  Check compression pressure consecutively on all the cylinders using the compression tester.
  Note
Use of tester → Operating Instructions.
–  Operate starter until the tester no longer indicates a pressure rise.

–  Screw in glow plugs with flexible-head wrench for glow plugs.
   Tightening torque: 15 Nm
–  Interrogate fault memory and erase → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
  Note
Separating the plug connection at the injection pump causes faults to be stored.
