Replacing valve stem seals
Replacing valve stem seals
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Pressure hose -MP 1-210 (VW 653/3)-
t  Valve lever -MP 1-211 (VW 541/1A/5) -
t  Assembly device for valves -MP 1-213 (2036)-
t  Valve supporting plate -MP 1-218 -
t  Blank holder for valve spring -MP 1-229 (3362)- with pressure plate -MP 1-229/1 (3362/1)-
t  Valve stem seal extractor -MP 1-230 (3364)-
t  Valve stem seal insertion tool - MP 1-233 (3365)-
Removing
  Note
With cylinder head removed, use valve lever -MP 1-211-, assembly device for valves -MP 1-213- and valve supporting plate -MP 1-218-.
(with cylinder head installed)
–  Removing the camshaft housing → Chapter.
–  Remove roller rocker arm and place on a clean surface. Make sure the roller rocker arms are not interchanged.
–  Unscrew the spark plugs with spark plug wrench.
–  Put the piston of the relevant cylinder at “bottom dead centre”.
   
–  Screw on blank holder for valve spring -MP 1-229- with pressure plate -MP 1-229/1-.
–  Screw the pressure hose -MP 1-210- in the spark plug thread.
–  Connect pressure hose to compressed air [min. 0.6 MPa (6°bar) overpressure] and remove the valve springs with blank holder for valve spring -MP 1-229-.
–  Pull off valve stem seal with extractor for valve stem seal -MP 1-230-.
Install
–  Insert the supplied plastic bushings on the relevant valve stem. This will prevent any damage to the new valve stem seals.

–  Insert the new valve stem seal -B- in the insertion tool for valve stem seal -MP 1-233-.
–  Oil the sealing lip of the valve stem seal and carefully slide onto the valve guide -A-.
–  Installing camshaft housing → Chapter.
Further installation occurs in a similar way in reverse order to removal.
