Inspecting vacuum setting element and tension rods for charge pressure control for engines with engine identification characters BKD, AZV
Inspecting vacuum setting element and tension rods for charge pressure control for engines with engine identification characters BKD, AZV
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand vacuum pump, e.g. -VAS 6213-
Faults at tension rods or at vacuum setting element of charge pressure control lead to the following faults:
t  Specified values for charge pressure are not reached.
t  Poor performance.
t  Irregular performance in the partial load region.
t  Engine jerking in change-overs.
Test sequence
l  Vacuum piping for tightness and completeness checked → Chapter.
l  Charge-air system for tightness checked → Chapter.
–  Remove engine cover → Chapter.

–  Connect the connecting hose -2- to the vacuum setting element and to the hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213-.
–  Position the sliding ring -1- of the hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- in the -direction of arrow- for “vacuum”.
  Note
A second mechanic is required for the additional test.
–  Generate vacuum with the hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- and observe the movement of the tension rod of exhaust turbocharger.
  Note
For the inspection use a mirror.
  S21-0141
Nominal values:
l  At a vacuum of 0.05...0.120 bar (0.005…0.012 MPa) the tension rod must move up.
l  At a vacuum of 0.550...0.620 bar (0.055…0.062 MPa) the tension rod must lie at the top against the stop.
–  Remove the connecting hose from the hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- and at the same time observe the tension rod movement over the entire adjustment range.
l  The tension rod must move without jolting over the entire adjustment range.
If the specified values are not achieved or the tension rod only moves in jolts:
–  Replace exhaust turbocharger → Chapter.
  Note
t  If in case of doubt, the measuring accuracy of the vacuum at the hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- is not adequate, a turbocharger tester can be used, e.g. -V.A.G 1397 A- for a more precise measurement.
t  Connection of the turbocharger tester: → Operating instructions.
