Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Engine/gearbox jack with adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1383 A- with -V.A.G 1359/2-
t  Wooden insert 490 x 270 x 50 mm for adapter -V.A.G 1359/2-
t  Vehicle diagnosis, measurement and information system -VAS-
t  Fixing device -T10096-
t  Ball joint extractor -3287A-
t  Jumper cable (commercially available)
t  Extraction bottle (commercially available)
t  Catch pan (commercially available)
t  Plastic screw plugs for line connections on the power-assisted steering gear (commercially available)
t  Hydraulic oil → Chapter
  Note
t  Apart from replacing the bellows, track rod ends and track rods no other repairs may be carried out on the power-steering gear.
t  Absolute cleanliness is required when working on the power steering.
t  Thoroughly clean the connection points and their surroundings before releasing.
t  Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover if the repair cannot be carried out immediately.
t  Do not use fluffy cloths.
t  Remove spare parts from their wrapping immediately before fitting.
t  Use only genuine wrapped parts.
t  Do not use drained hydraulic oil again.
t  Replace gaskets on hydraulic lines after each removal.
t  Disposing of the old power-steering gear → Chapter.
t  Pay attention to the measures after re-connecting the battery → Electrical System; Rep. gr.27.
