  Note
t  Before replacing the engine control unit -J248- first the control unit identification and hence the coding of the current control unit must be interrogated → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  When replacing, the new engine control unit -J248- must be coded → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
Removing
  Note
t  If the engine control unit must be replaced, the → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 must be connected and the function “replace engine control unit” must be performed.
t  The learning values are erased when the plug is removed from the engine control unit, the fault memory contents are however retained.
–  Remove the cooling water tank cover → Body Work → Rep. Gr.66.
–  Switch off ignition.
   
–  Unscrew screws of box cover from engine control unit -arrows- and remove cover.
–  Loosen mounting bracket from engine control unit.
–  Unlock connector from engine control unit and unplug.
–  Take out control unit.
Install
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the following points:
–  Connect both connectors and lock.
  Note
After installation of the new control unit, activate the engine control unit in the “guided fault detection system” in the diagnostic field “replace engine control unit” → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
