Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand vacuum pump (e.g. -V.A.G 1390-)
Test sequence
–  Remove engine cover.
–  Remove the connecting hose for the charge air pipe/induction pipe.
–  Disconnect vacuum hose from mechanical exhaust-gas recirculation valve.
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- to the valve.
   
–  Operate hand vacuum pump and observe the diaphragm rod. The diaphragm rod must move in the direction of the arrow.
–  Detach hose of hand vacuum pump from mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve. The diaphragm rod must move back to its original position against the direction of the arrow.
