Installing

Note

t	There must be no oil or coolant in the blind holes of the cylinder head bolts in the cylinder block.

t	Remove the new cylinder head seal from its wrapping immediately before fitting.

t	Treat the new gasket with the utmost care. Any damage will result in leaks.

–	Stuff clean cloth into the cylinders to avoid any dirt getting in between cylinder wall and piston.

–	Also avoid dirt getting into the coolant.

–	Now carefully clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder head and the cylinder block. Remove old sealant residue using a chemical device. Make sure this does not cause any extended scoring or scratching.

–	Carefully remove released dirt as well as all cleaning cloths.

–	Position piston of cylinder 1 to top dead centre and slightly turn the crankshaft anticlockwise again.

–	Position the new cylinder heads.

t	Pay attention to centring pins in cylinder block -arrows-.

t	Pay attention to installation position of cylinder head gasket, the spare parts number must be legible.

–	Insert the cylinder head.

–	Insert new cylinder head bolts and tighten by hand.

–	Tighten cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown as follows:

1st Pre-tighten with torque wrench:

Step I = 40 Nm

Step II = 60 Nm

2nd Tighten with a rigid wrench:

Stage III = ¹/₄ turn (90 °)

Stage IV = ¹/₄ turn (90 °)

The further assembly is carried out in reverse order to disassembly.

–	install toothed belt and set the timing → Chapter.

Pour in coolant → Chapter.

–	If the battery earth strap is disconnected and connected, carry out a few additional operations → Electrical System; Rep. Gr. 27.

–	Undertake the work operation “Procedure after interrupting the power supply” → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.

–	Make a test drive and interrogate the fault memory → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
