Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Driveshaft, Intermediate Shaft & 4-Joint Replace

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove engine under cover (if equipped).

2.

Remove cotter pin and bearing locknut cap.

3.

While depressing the brake pedal, loosen bearing locknut.

4.

While depressing the brake pedal, loosen six nuts attaching front driveshaft to intermediate shaft or differential side gear shaft assembly.

5.

Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle and suspend unit with piece of wire.

6.

Remove disc rotor and left hand side transaxle case protector, if equipped.

7.

On Corolla, 1987-88 Camry, 1985-86 Camry equipped with diesel engine and on left side of 1985-86 Camry equipped with gasoline engine and
automatic transmission, disconnect steering knuckle from lower arm as follows: 

a. Remove two bolts attaching ball joint to steering knuckle.
b. Disconnect lower arm from steering knuckle.

Using tool No. 09950-20014 or equivalent, pull axle hub from front driveshaft.

9.

Remove driveshaft.

10.

On 1984 Camry gasoline models, remove bolts and bearing bracket from cylinder block, then disconnect right hand side intermediate shaft from
universal joint.

11.

On 1984 Camry gasoline models, proceed as follows: 

a. Using tool Nos. 09520-32010 and 09520-32030 or equivalents, install tools onto universal joint.
b. Drive universal joint from transaxle case assembly.

12.

If center driveshaft is to be removed on 1985-88 Camry with gasoline engine, proceed as follows: 

a. Drain transaxle fluid or differential oil into suitable container.
b. Remove center driveshaft locknut.
c. Remove snap ring from bearing bracket, then pull out center driveshaft.

13.

Reverse procedure to install. Torque brake caliper attaching bolts to 65 ft. lbs. Torque bearing locknut while depressing brake pedal to 137 ft. lbs.
Torque front driveshaft attaching nuts to 27 ft. lbs. On 1985-86 Camry with diesel engine and 1985-86 Camry with gasoline engine and automatic
transmission, torque knuckle to ball joint attaching bolts to 83 ft. lbs. On 1987-88 Camry, torque knuckle to ball joint attaching bolts to 94 ft. lbs.
On Corolla, torque knuckle to ball joint attaching bolts to 47 ft. lbs.
