Intermediate Shaft, Remove and Install

Caution

Vehicles with Airbag: Turn steering to straight-ahead position, remove ignition key and engage steering lock.

  Remove

Remove footwell panelling and air distribution duct on driver's side. Remove clamp bolts (1) and (2) – note installation position of clamp bolts. Push intermediate shaft (3) together slightly and remove.

  Install

Push intermediate shaft onto steering shaft. Clean thread and insert clamp bolt with locking compound – note installation position of clamp bolt – tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.

Caution

Before inserting the clamp bolt make certain that steering shaft groove (arrow) is flush with the intermediate shaft bore hole.

  Install

Push intermediate shaft (2) onto steering gear – ensure that wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Clean thread and insert clamp bolt (1) with locking compound – tightening torque 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.

Caution

Before inserting the clamp bolt make certain that groove of steering gear shaft (arrow) is flush with the intermediate shaft bore hole.

  Install

Install air distribution duct and footwell panelling.

  Inspect

Check straight-ahead position, and adjust if necessary – see operation "Straight-ahead Position, Check and Adjust".
