Con Rod Bearing > < Check crankshaft bearing clearance (with Plastigage)

Check the bearing clearance of the crankshaft (use micrometer and internal measuring device)

Note:   Crankshaft has been removed.

  Install

Important:   Measure this without the bearing shells.
1.   Attach cylinder block base plate without crankshaft bearing shells
Note:   Note differing bolts.
Important:   Note tightening order.
•   (I) Tighten 10 M10 bolts 20 Nm + 80°
Note:   It is not necessary to replace the bolts for the measuring procedure
•   (II) Tighten 10 M8 bolts 30 Nm

  Measure

2.   The mean crankshaft bearing diameter is determined by measuring at points I, II and III and computing the result.
3.   Formula for calculating the mean crankshaft bearing diameter

Example:

I

54.711 mm

II

54.714 mm

III

54.712 mm

164.137 mm

: 3 =

54.712 mm

4.   The mean crankshaft bearing diameter is 54.712 mm
Object Number: 8063957 Size: DEFAULT

5.   The crankshaft bearing journal diameter is determined by measuring at points I and II with a micrometer and computing the mean.
6.   Formula for calculating the mean crankshaft bearing journal diameter:

Example:

I

50.994 mm

II

50.998 mm

101.992 mm

: 2 =

50.996 mm

7.   The mean crankshaft bearing journal diameter is 50.996 mm
Object Number: 2387881 Size: DEFAULT

8.   The crankshaft bearing clearance is calculated using the difference between the crankshaft bearing bore and crankshaft bearing journal diameters and the thickness of the crankshaft bearing shells.
Note:   Different classes of crankshaft bearing shells can be used to give a smaller bearing clearance. The thicker of the two shells must then be used in the cylinder block base plate.

Example:

Mean crankshaft bearing diameter

54.712 mm

Mean crankshaft bearing journal diameter

- 50.996 mm

Clearance without bearing shells

3.716 mm

Clearance without bearing shells

3.716 mm

Thickness of 1 cylinder block base plate crankshaft bearing shell (blue)

- 1.843 mm

Thickness of 1 cylinder block base plate crankshaft bearing shell (pink)

- 1.839 mm

Crankshaft bearing clearance

0.034 mm

9.   Permissible crankshaft bearing clearance: 0.028 – 0.048 mm

  Remove

10.   Detach cylinder block base plate
Note:   Note differing bolts
•   Unscrew 20 bolts
