Steering Intermediate Shaft, Remove and
Install
Remove
1. |
Remove inner panelling for lower driver's side instrument panel
padding
|
Important: Before removing the
steering intermediate shaft (1) from the steering pinion, set the
steering to straight-ahead position and lock with the steering
lock.

2. |
Remove lower clamp bolt (2) from steering intermediate shaft at
steering pinion (3)
Note: Do not pull lower
universal joint of steering intermediate shaft away from steering
pinion yet!
Note: During the
operation "Front Axle Body, Remove and Install" in group E, the
steering intermediate shaft can now be pushed together in the
length compensation and the lower universal joint drawn off the
steering pinion. No further dismantling of the steering
intermediate shaft is necessary!

Unscrew upper clamp bolt (1) for steering intermediate shaft at
steering shaft
|
4. |
Detach steering intermediate shaft from steering spindle and
steering pinion and remove
Note: To do this, push
steering intermediate shaft together in length compensation
(arrow)

5. |
Clean thread

Clean thread of clamp bolt
|
• |
Clean thread of upper clamp bolt in steering intermediate
shaft
|
|
Install
Important: It must be possible to
push the steering intermediate shaft on easily by hand
|
6. |
Push upper universal joint of steering intermediate shaft (2)
on to steering spindle (3)
Note: Teeth of steering
shaft and steering intermediate shaft only align in one position
(arrows)!

7. |
Insert upper clamp bolt (1) of steering intermediate shaft on
steering shaft with locking compound
• |
Tighten upper clamp bolt (1) 25 Nm +
60°
Note: Bore of steering
intermediate shaft must align with groove in steering shaft!
Note: The
above-mentioned procedures are not required in the operation "Front
Axle Body, Remove and Install"

|
8. |
Check the straight-ahead position of the front wheels
visually
|
9. |
Separate steering intermediate shaft (1) in the length
compensation and push on to lower universal joint (4) on steering
pinion (3)

Unlock steering lock for simplicity's sake
Note: Bore for clamp
bolt must be on the side of the steering pinion milled flat.
|
|
Important: Turn the steering
wheel only slightly to correct the position of the steering
intermediate rod to the steering pinion.
|
10. |
Screw in lower clamp bolt (2) with new self-locking nut
Note: Do not tighten
lower clamp bolt (2) yet!
|
|
|
11. |
Lock length compensation of steering intermediate shaft with
KM-6181 (1)
Note: Bores in the
inner and outer pipe must align!
|
12. |
Tighten nut (2) of the lower clamp bolt 24 Nm
|
13. |
Install inner panelling for lower driver's side instrument
panel padding
|
14. |
Check straight-ahead position and adjust if necessary
|
